Some members have reported that they did not receive the photo we attached of Mike Kenney so we are re-sending in another format.
After 14 years at the helm of RDGCC, Don McFarlane informed the board in September 2019 that he wanted to retire. Don’s tenure will officially end on March 31, 2020.
The board decided to create a GM Hiring committee which consisted of Ellen Van Doesburg, Darrin Steinke, Phil Pattison and Chung Mah. It was the intention of the committee to have a new GM in place by Dec. 31, 2019 so it placed ads on the PGA of Canada website, Canadian Club Managers website and Indeed for qualified applicants. By the time the application deadline closed on Nov. 10, 2019, the committee received over 80 applicants. The committee decided to short list the applicant field by setting forth the criteria of the applicant having PGA of Canada designation as well as CSCM (Canadian Society of Club Managers) and CCM (Certified Club Manager) affiliations. The applicant field was short listed to 5 candidates and they were invited to come to RDGCC for an interview. After the interviews, Michael Kenney was chosen to be the new GM of RDGCC. What stood out most when selecting Mike was his leadership style, financial acumen, experience, and people skills. He had multiple options for his future but sees the great benefits and potential of the RDG&CC.
Mike was born in Calgary but spent his formative years on a farm near Rosebud, AB. He grew up playing Willow Park Golf and Country Club. Mike and his wife Diane are both avid golfers and have been married for 30 years. They have 2 sons, Stephen and Thomas and they are looking forward to having a daughter-in-law in September.
Mike has been a CPGA professional since 1989 and first became a General Manager in 2007 at Southwood Golf and CC. He has since been a GM at Windermere, Bearspaw, Glencoe and Royal Montreal.
Mike has taken the opportunity to advance himself academically by obtaining both the CCM (Certified Club Manager) and the CCE (Certified Chief Executive) designations through the Canadian Society of Club Managers and the Club Management Association of America. He is the only individual to hold these two designations as well as being a Class A PGA of Canada professional.
Mike is a Calgary Flames fan while Diane cheers for the Oilers. Mike officially starts March 15th and we are extremely happy and excited to have a leader of his caliber and qualifications as our new GM. Mike will be formally introduced to the membership at the Opening Reception Friday April 17,2020. Please join me in welcoming Mike to the RDGCC. We are in good hands.
